Lawyers Ebru Timtik and Aytaç Ünsal have been on a death fast for 223 and 192 days, respectively, demanding “a fair trial.”
The Coordination for Freedom of the Defense demanded the release of death fasting lawyers Ebru Timtik and Aytaç Ünsan in a gathering in front of the İstanbul Courthouse.
A banner that read, “Let justice be served, let Ebru and Aytaç live,” was shown during the meeting, which was also attended by the families of the lawyers.
Having been on a death fast since January and February 2, Timtik and Ünsal were not released from prison despite a Forensic Medicine Institution report that said it was unsuitable for them to stay in prison. They were eventually hospitalized.
Timtik is held at Dr. Sadi Konuk Training and Research Hospital and Ünsal is held at Kanuni Sultan Süleyman Training and Research Hospital in İstanbul.
Reading out a statement for the press, attorney Kemal Aytaç said, “We are tired of asking for justice. Our friends have come to the brink of death, but the state is still shutting its ears, waiting for our friends to die. A fair trial is a right. Even demanding this is a shame,” the Mesopotamia Agency reported.
Speaking after Aytaç, Progressive Lawyers’ Association (ÇHD) member Çiğdem Akbulut said that they were sentenced to prison unlawfully.
By not releasing the lawyers, the court “signed the death warrant of the lawyers,” he added.
