The Athens Bar Association has expressed its solidarity with detained fellow lawyers, Ebru Timtik and Aytaç Ünsal, who are on a hunger strike in Turkey demanding a fair trial.
The two colleagues, as well as other lawyers-members of the legal association “Union of Progressive Lawyers” and the president of Selçuk Kozağaçlı, were convicted under the anti-terrorism legislation and in excess of any guarantee of the rule of law, for “criminal acts” were performed in the context of their legal duties.
The Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe (CCBE) has twice condemned the illegal sentencing of eighteen colleagues: in its letter of 26/3/2019 to Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan through then-President Jose de Freitas and more recently with his letter dated 17/2/2020 through the current president of Ranko Pelicaric.
The Athens Bar Association has already, in its announcement of 12/3/2020, expressed its solidarity with fellow lawyers who are on hunger strike, but also with all the democratic citizens of the neighboring country who are being persecuted for rational reasons.
The DSA further expressed its deep sorrow and displeasure over the death of hunger striker Helin Bolek in a statement dated 10/4/2020.
A delegation of the Board of Directors will deliver the above-mentioned resolutions to the Turkish Embassy in Athens, declaring its full solidarity with our colleagues.
